Volvo is adopting renewable fuel as it increases models available with biodiesel B100 engines, made from treated vegetable oil.
Internationally, B100 is now available for a wide selection of engines across the Volvo FL, FE, FM, FMX, FH and FH16 models. It says this is a part of its strategy to reduce its trucks climate impacts.
Volvo Trucks head of product management and quality Jan Hjelmgren says that the range of renewable fuels on offer including biodiesel, HVO and biogas should be attractive to interested customers.
“Our customers are asking for solutions to reduce their carbon emissions and renewable fuels is an attractive option – it’s simply an efficient way to reduce CO2 from transport here and now,” he says.
“As a global truck maker, we need to cater for a wide variety of transport needs and market conditions which is why we do not only invest in new technologies, but also in solutions that decarbonise transport in the short and long term.”
Volvo says the CO2 reduction from using biodiesel can range from anywhere between 30 per cent and 70 per cent compared to traditional diesel, making it a viable option in reducing emissions long term.
The manufacturer’s current range of medium- and heavy-duty trucks implement powertrains that run on diesel, biodiesel, HVO, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), LNG (Liquified Natural Gas), Bio-CNG, Bio-LNG and electricity.
Volvo is aiming for all its new trucks to produce net-zero emissions by 2040.
